The period for oaks "Bellota" is called "Montanera" starting in October and finishing in March. At the age of 12 or 14 months the pig starts its fattening period during the Montanera when it eats just Bellota. Iberico pigs have to make exercise to get the fat infiltrated into the muscles and they should eat 9 to 10 kgs of bellota (acorn) every day to get 1 kg of weight. For the last 2 months of their lives minimum they will be just eating bellota (acorns). The slaughter of the animals is carried out when they are around 16 to 18 months old and an average of 150 kg.
